The Archdeacon of Northampton is a senior ecclesiastical officer within the Diocese of such she or he is responsible for the disciplinary supervision of the clergy within its six rural deaneries: Brackley, Brixworth, Daventry, Greater Northampton, Towcester and Wellingborough. The incumbent is Richard Ormston, who took up his position in February Calendar No. 1. Wills and Administrations recorded in the Episcopal Registers of the Ancient Diocese of Lincoln, During the period covered by this calendar the diocese of Lincoln extended from the Humber to the Thames, and included no less than nine counties, namely, Lincoln, Leicester, Rutland, Northampton, Huntingdon, Bedford, Buckingham, Hertford, and Oxford.

Longden unfortunately did not leave a full account of his work at the Northampton Probate Registry or give any details of the documents preserved there. The archdeaconry of Northampton is mentioned in the 12th century, and in included the deaneries of Peterborough, Northampton, Brackley, Oundle, Higham, Daventry, Preston, Weldon, Rothwell and Haddon. Northampton was a favourite meeting-place of the councils and parliaments of the Norman and Plantagenet kings.

Archdeacons. Archdeacons share in the mission of the Church, exercising their ministry in close collaboration with the bishop, and play a significant role in the appointment, oversight, pastoral care and discipline of the clergy.

The Archdeacons are there to ensure that the bishop is aware of the needs and concerns of clergy and people. They induct and install ministers, conduct visitations of.

In his lifetime Mr. Isham Longden contributed abstracts of some Administrations, granted in the Archdeaconry Court of Northampton, to Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica and these, with an index, were subsequently reprinted as a separate book ().
